Natural skincare: where to begin

Natural skincare: where to begin

Natural skincare has taken the beauty industry by storm - and for good reason! At

māla, we believe that the best things for our skin are given to us by our planet. If you're new to the world of skincare, you may be overwhelmed with the abundance of advice and products out there - but we are here to help!

1. Understand your skin type

Before diving into natural skincare, it's important that you identify your skin type to help decide which products and brands are best for you to use.

- Oily: Prone to shine and acne.

- Dry: Often feels tight or flaky.

- Combination: Oily in some areas (like the T-zone) and dry in others.

- Sensitive: Easily irritated by products or environmental factors.

2. Simplify your routine

A key principle of natural skincare is simplicity! Consider the following to start with, and try to resist the urge on piling on multiple products. Remember, your skin needs time to adjust to new products, so using multiple will also overcomplicate this process.

- Cleanser: Choose a gentle, natural cleanser. Honey, aloe vera, jojoba or almond oil are usually good places to start. At māla, we have a cleansing milk which includes cucumber (to cleanse). Cleansers only need to be used at the start of your bedtime skincare routine. Using cleansing products too often (such as multiple times during the day) may cause breakouts.

- Moisturiser: Look for plant-based oils for moisture (unless your skin is oily/combination - in which case you may consider using lightweight hydrating creams). Our Go-Glow Day Cream uses pomegranate and hyaluronic acid - which is suitable for all skin types.

- Sunscreen: Opt for a mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to protect your skin. Don't forget the ageing that sun gives us. Also remember - winter sun is as dangerous as summer sun!

 3. Read labels carefully.

Just because it says 'natural' does not mean it is free from harmful ingredients. Look for:

- Organic ingredients

- Free from synthetic fragrances

- Free from parabens

- Free from sulfates and phthalates

- Eco friendly packaging & cruelty free!

Remember to be patient and understand that skincare is a journey, not a quick fix. It may take time for your skin to adjust to products and detox from chemicals used previously, but try to help the process by being consistent. Remember to listen to your skin: your skin will change according to the seasons, diet and exercise, and stress levels. Go beyond skincare and look after your health from within: stay hydrated; eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats; get enough sleep; and find positive ways to manage stress.

Natural skincare isn't just what you put on your skin, it's a holistic approach to wellness. Your skin will thank you!
